Farewell Leigha - have a great time at Uni. Thank you for all you have done for BSS over the years. Here are a few answers she gave to my questions!
When did you start swimming at Beachfield?
Horse riding, I loan a horse.
What's the best thing about competitive swimming?
Becoming disciplined and wanting to win. I
feel swimming has made me a lot more confident about myself. Which has helped me through school, college and now hopefully University.
And the worst?
The amount of training that you need to
continuously put in to get good results.
Who were your biggest influences/ inspirers in swimming?
My mum (Shara Mitchell) she
used to swim when she was younger and I wanted to be better than her. I’d also always watch Rebecca Adlington on the TV and watch her race as most of her events are the events I am strongest
Did you ever think of leaving the club for another and/or quitting swimming altogether when you were younger?
Yes to go to Black Lion at the age of 14 I was the fastest swimmer the club, It wasn’t until Josh Barber got to about 16yrs that I had someone who could beat me so I did think about moving on to give me more swimmers with similar abilities to train with and push me.
Do you have any regrets about your swimming career?
No, however I would have liked to get a National
Will you continue competitive Masters swimming at Uni?
Yes, I have a trial with Bournemouth on
What achievements in swimming are you most proud of?
Continuously gaining Kent and Regional times
over the last 6 years and representing Medway ASA in France for the past 6 years although the first year I was invited I was too nervous to go on my own as there wasn’t anyone else I really knew
going and the second year (when I was brave enough) was unable to attend as I had broken my arm.
Can you remember one particular race which was, in your opinion, your best/favourite performance?
400M Freestyle against Anna at Medways on 21
September 2013 and I swam 4:38:43.
Which is your favourite pool and why?
K2 at Crawley and now LAC London Aquatics
What advice would you give to a 9/10 yo age group swimmer, just starting off?
Train hard and listen to your coaches advice.
Try and be the best that you can. You need to believe in yourself when you start competing.
What advice would you give a Kent Qualified 13/14 yo swimmer thinking whether or not to either give it a "real go", or quit?
13/14 is the most important age to continue and
I wouldn’t recommend “giving up” that early. Stick with it if you can, a lot of swimmers don’t get great results until they are a bit older and stronger. This age you are generally
growing at lot and hormones are all over the place it does affect your performance. Take advice from your parents and coaches before you give up as this may be something that you regret in the
How could Beachfield improve what it offers to age group swimmers?
Swimmers should not be promoted too early, this then means that they are rushed into the black hat lane. There isn’t enough room. Swimmers should be put into the two second to top lanes and do the same as the black hats to even it out. By having too many in the black hat lane is far too stressful for our speed and some new swimmers are not able to keep up. Because of this swimmers are not bothering or training hard enough they should be demoted, it’s unfair to keep other swimmers from training to their best ‘Train hard or go home’
Many thanks for these answers - I'm sure they
are very interesting and useful to our younger swimmers and their parents!
Results from Medway (Gala 2) on 4.4.15 are here. BSS swimmers achieved 9 medals and 15 PBs. Super swim from Oliver in 100m Free 57.96 PB and Gold. Another Gold and Medway record for Leigha! PBs updated.

5th Place for BSS at the NASL Rd 3 fixture at Medway Park on 13th Dec. 2014. 3 first places (Brandon, Heidi and Steph), 11 second places and 8 third places. A decent points total of 156 could have been much higher ( and pushed us into third) if not for 3 DQs and 5 "no swimmer entered" in 8 out of the 50 events. Unfortunately, a sickness bug hit a number of our team members. Despite this, no swimmer pulled out of the team - well done! PBs were earned by Charlie, William and Polly. See the Results tab for the points, times and other details.
Top performances from Brandon, Freddie and William. All recorded KQTs at the GNSC L3 SC Open on 6&7th Dec. 2014. Freddie and Brandon won Gold medals in 50m Fr and 200IM respectively. Good swims from Grace and Steph as well. See Results tab for details.
A very good performance at the National Arena League fixture (L3) on 8.11.14 at Crook Log. We finished 4th with 4 first places (Heidi, Tiz, Leigha and Brandon). 2 more KQTs were gained - by Brandon in the 100m Breaststroke and by Heidi in the 100m Back. Well done to all swimmers - some of whom had to swim 7/8/9 races!! The next NASL fixture is on 12.12.14. Please make sure you are available for selection. See the Results tab for details. PB sheets have been updated. Photos of this gala are via the photo tab on the left.
The next day, 3 of our swimmers scored 8 out of 10 PBs in the Kent Development Gala L3 at Medway Park. Well done Lily, Grace and Charlie. See the Results tab for details. PB sheets have been updated.

BSS held its annual Learn to Swim Gala on Saturday 13th September. A packed Sheerness Pool saw some great races between BSS, Maidstone SC, GNSC, Sittingbourne & Milton SC and Faversham SC.
The final scores were Faversham SC 228, BSS 221, Maidstone SC 160, Gravesend SC 123 and Sittingbourne & Milton SC 107.
The senior swimmers helped out with starting, timing, refreshments, medal presentation etc, which was great to see. But it was all about the little ones, and they showed eveyone what great potential they have. They also had great fun!
Well done to Faversham SC for retaining the trophy, but our very young swimmers more than held their own. I was particularly pleased with their push offs/starts and stroke technique. Well done to them and our LTS teachers. Correct technique will produce fine swimmers in the years to come. Full individual results to follow. Click on the photos tab on the left to see images from this wonderfully inspiring gala!
Many thanks to the spectators for producing such an electric atmosphere and to all the officials and teachers/coaches as well!
